Real-life Dracula
Just like Jonathan,
I didn’t know Dracula was a bad guy--
not in the beginning.
But he couldn’t hide the truth forever.
Once I came to know
his true nature,
the nearly-forgotten, suspicious moments of the past
fit together in my mind:
his smooth words and logic,
as if hypnotic abilities
that trap listeners in his lies;
his stream of addresses,
making it impossible to pin him down
and confront him,
as if disappearing in a mist
without a trace;
his refusal to see the impact his choices have on us,
as if no mirror could show him
the reflection of consequences.
He’s sucking us dry,
and I don’t know what to do.
Any knife I thrust
goes through him without harm,
and this Dracula can enter my life
without invitation.
Daylight and garlic have no effect;
my last hope is a stake to the heart--
but where can I find
a sharp enough point?
