My Fans
Everywhere I go,
people say hello
because they want
the thrill of it.
To them,
I’m not a real girl--
I’m a story
to tell their friends.
Everywhere I go,
I make sure to smile
for all the pictures--
discrete and blatant--
that are being taken.
To them,
I’m an oddity,
an opportunity to be taken.
Everywhere I go,
I’m recognized.
They want my smile,
they want my words,
they want a piece of me.
But I want a friend.
I want the loneliness to dissipate.
I want to be loved
not for what I am,
not for how I seem,
but for who I am
to those
who take the time
to ask.
