Running to Something Better
I flee all I know
for the hope of leaving
the threats to my happiness behind.
The chance of hope I run to
protecting me instead of
siding with the threats
is slim
but worth the risk.
My journey shows
that I am foolish and unprepared
for the dangers of life.
But arriving at my destination
still happy
will be worth
the blisters and the hunger,
the cold and the fear.
Refuge comes from a stranger’s kindness,
helping me before
I die on the way
to an unknown reception
at my anticipated destination.
I have found happiness again,
thriving on compassion,
no longer at the mercy of envy and vengeance.
