Sunburnt
The pain you left me with
is an even coat of sunburnt skin.
Alone, I can feel
the effects of being around you
radiating from my skin.
Going back into your bright presence
stings --
reminding me of my unhealed-state --
but I can’t avoid you.
Like the sun,
you always show up,
making me more appreciative
of rainy days and their soothing nature.
I know there are ways
to protect me
from you and the pain you inflict,
but I never think I’ll need them
until I feel myself burning again --
too late to run for shade or sunblock.
I see that you aren’t good for me,
and I promise,
as I apply aloe to these burns,
that I’ll remember this pain
and prevent it next time.
