"The World is More Than the Sum of Its Parts" Inspired by 100 Days of Sunlight:

The World is More Than the Sum of Its Parts

How’s your day been?

It’s been nice.

Why?

Because the sky is a happy blue

and is filled with puffy clouds

that invite my imagination to sink into them.

The world is full of

sights, smells, and sounds,

tastes and physical feelings

that everyone can enjoy --

but not everyone does.

What’s your favorite season?

Winter.

Why?

I love the comfort of being blanket-wrapped

while reading by the fireplace,

knowing that I’m warm even though it’s freezing outside.

These potentially-universal experiences

are meaningful to individuals because of emotions --

because of the intangible feelings

that each sense awakens in the mind

and in the soul.

What’s your favorite bird?

Hummingbirds.

Why?

Because the awe of watching them flit in and out of sight

has filled me every summer

while sitting on the porch swing at my grandparents’ house.

Emotions call back memories,

enhancing the amazingness of today

because of past happinesses.

As we add personal experiences with physical senses,

life becomes more than words can convey.
