Over and Over
I’ll be honest,
most of my discretionary time
is spent with books.
I choose what to read
and how long to read it –
most of the time.
I am always in control
of when a book is in my hands.
But some books have a way
of holding on to my mind.
Characters, words, plot points
get stuck in my thoughts for days
or come back to haunt me
months after I believed we were finished.
These haunting books
demand to be reread –
sometimes more than once.
I find myself moved by something –
something said,
something done,
something implied,
something that encourages old desires,
something that encourages old thoughts,
something that sparks new thoughts,
something that sparks new desires.
Whatever it may be,
the words and I
have communicated beyond the page.
And I reread to bring that feeling back
over and over.
