Spy in the Rain
Sneaking was supposed to be easy.
The cloudy night
would have ensured anonymity –
until the clouds released their burden.
Options were dwindling,
but the rain was not.
Squelching through the streets
would attract attention,
but so would removing the loud shoes
in favor of bare feet.
The job still needed to be done.
The added risk was minimal –
comparatively.
Going back now
would mean admitting
the cause was worth less
than one person
with only a potential of being caught –
an already daily risk.
Any one day
could be the last.
Running through the rain,
approaching the target,
still under the night’s darkness,
a risk was taken.
To save them all.
