Crossing the Line
To be the heroine of my story,
I must slay the dragons before me
and reach the top of every mountain.
The dragons should know better
than to get in my way,
and those daring enough
to summit mountains with me
should know better
than to slow me down.
The dragons are the villains
because they always are.
It’s not the heroine’s responsibility
to interview each foe before the slaying.
The mountains need to be climbed
because their dirt isn’t worth anything
except the view from their peaks.
A heroine is not responsible
for anyone foolish enough
to get lost along the way.
I’m the heroine of my story,
so you can’t tell me that
I’m also the villain of yours.
