Choice of Futures
You see more than I do –
an advantage by any standard.
All I know is the past,
hoping that what I do now
will build the future I hope for.
The past, present, and future
all lie before you,
a menu of options I can’t see
with any certainty.
I am at your mercy.
You’ve seen more of me than I have,
you know more of me than I do,
but do you want the future I want?
If I had my choice
from the menu of futures,
I’d choose the one
where you and I
spend all our time together –
talking, walking, laughing,
anything
everything
together.
Seeing as that is not the present,
despite my hopes and choices
to make that my future –
our future –
I have to assume that
the future I would choose
is not the same one you have chosen.
And if that’s the case,
would you please tell me
what my future looks like without you?
If maybe I can still be happy?
Because I can’t picture that future.
