Need to Believe
Mama weaves words into truth.
If Mama says tomorrow will be better,
it is.
If Mama pinky promises sunshine,
it appears.
If Mama tells of when she met the faerie queen,
it happened.
Queen Amaeliae lives in the willow
behind the house Mama grew up in.
When Mama was small,
she got lost one day and curled up under the willow.
A voice whispered for her to climb,
and she pulled herself up
branch by branch
until she was in the clouds.
That’s where the queen found her,
tears not yet dry on her face.
Queen Amaeliae was followed by moonlight
and had a smile like a blooming daisy.
She told Mama where to go
and promised to always be close by,
even if Mama couldn’t see her.
From then on,
Mama was happy and strong.
and she never got sick.
When Mama moved,
she planted a new willow
and the magic stayed with her.
Until the willow in our backyard
was murdered.
Attacked by a stupid boy
carving in the willow’s bark.
Now Mama is dying,
Mama is sad and weak,
and sicker than she’s ever been.
But I know the faeries are real,
and I know where to find Queen Amaeliae.
Today I leave for the house Mama grew up in,
I’ll walk every step if I need to.
I need to believe the faerie will be there.
I need to believe she will heal Mama again.
