All that Matters
When the enemy is in front of us,
when we are meeting each other
hand for hand
life for life
them or us,
survival is all that matters.
When the only people left on the battlefield
are the dead,
when we measure and divide
men, ground, resources,
to determine whether we won this round,
not losing this round is all that matters.
When surrender’s flag is raised,
when negotiations are made,
when treaties are signed,
victory is all that matters—
because it’s ours.
But in the back of my mind is a whisper
of life
of humanity
of compassion:
our victory is another’s defeat.
And it was almost me.
