The Words Between Us
Words had connected us
through physical and figurative distance.
The words I had read so many times
they echoed in the beating of my heart.
Standing now face-to-face,
our words fill the comparatively miniscule
space that is still between us.
We breathe the words in our silence.
Our past words echo
in the beating of your heart and mine
in the air that fills our lungs
in the hesitation of our non-ink voices.
The words that have been said
are ready to drown us.
The words that are waiting to be heard
are ready to embrace us.
The words we share have power,
as do the words we don’t.
