Interpretation of History
Oh, how quickly we forget—
how quickly we destroy and rewrite.
Since the beginning of time and record,
the story is told by the tellers—
by those asked to do the telling.
Villains and triumphs are exaggerated,
embellishments are made.
By tomorrow,
the story-with-added-details
has been told so many times,
the added details have become fact
to the teller and the listener.
As told,
the villains stay villains,
heroic triumphs stay heroic,
embellishments are truth.
Repeat tellers can only share the history
they’ve been taught to tell.
