My Abyss
Cold
dark
alone
with no way out.
I lay at the bottom,
eyes closed
to feel in control
of the haunting shadows.
Maybe I deserve to be here,
solo forever.
I’ll believe it
and give up my painful hope
after one more cry.
“Help,” comes out as a whisper,
using the last of my strength.
I hear it echo up for a moment
before the dam breaks free
and tears fill my ears.
I imagine that someone heard.
I imagine the light they’ll bring
when they come to rescue me.
I imagine the gentle, comforting touch
of another human being wiping away tears.
I imagine a voice saying, “I’m here.”
And the voice echoes.
My hand is picked up
and warmed between two other hands.
I turn my face away.
“You’re not alone anymore.”
I shake my head.
“Open your eyes,” the voice urges.
I shake my head again.
“That’s okay. I’ll wait with you.”
With the hope I couldn’t kill,
I open my eyes to light.
