I Fight the Stars

I fight the stars,

arguing with their strict orbits and bright dispositions.

They want to bind my freedom,

to restrict my movements as they are restricted—

but I’m not content with their predictable paths.

I want the option to go left or down or backwards

or to stop suddenly

and enjoy one long moment.

They want to compel me to be happy,

to look forward with the hope of life even as light dims.

But I want the depth of joy that comes

from experiencing sorrow and loss,

knowing that, at least,

I took the steps toward what I want.

Falling might hurt,

but not knowing if I might have made it anyway

would be a more lasting pain.

So, yes,

I fight the stars—

I will always fight the stars

and their safe path that follows fate—

in favor of the chance to become a wish-granting star

before my light fades from view.
