Please Let Someone Else Be the Hero

One human amongst so many–

what difference can I make?

My knowledge does not become more useful

in an alien invasion,

during a zombie apocalypse,

or after earth-altering natural disaster.

I don’t feel strong enough

to weather life-altering events;

I don’t feel brave enough

to adapt and build life anew.

If the world is going to end,

I’d rather pencil that in after

my timely, painless death.

Heroes don’t look like me,

so I’m happy not to compete for that role.

Find someone better

than a high heel loving bibliophile.

I’ll make a difference in my own small way

in my own small sphere of influence,

and let someone else become

a hero for the ages

in the end of world

that I hope to never see.
