Secret Splinter
A secret is a splinter in your soul.
You tell yourself
it’s too small to make a difference,
it can’t anyone,
it doesn’t hurt you.
These lies fester and add pain—
unnecessary pain—
that you tell yourself doesn’t exist.
The splinter is too small,
too small to exist
and too small to hurt.
You dismiss the truth of the splinter
because you are scared,
scared of the pain of removal.
Removing the splinter
will reveal it to someone—
possibly everyone.
You would rather feel the pain
than let anyone know about the splinter.
So it sits
and it festers
and others poke at the wound they don’t know is there
until you have no choice,
until the pain of the splinter
equals the pain of revealing the truth.
A secret revealed is a balm to your soul.
