Between the Gods and the Dead

My world sits between the gods and the dead—

of course, yours does, too,

as we occupy the same world.

But while you or I might ignore the other purposefully,

you can only ignore gods and ghosts accidentally.

You and I can read the same words,

you and I can have the same boba order,

you and I can enjoy the same movie in a theater side by side,

and yet never know each other's names.

And you I,

we move on.

That’s the difference between mortals and immortals.

When the gods realized that they were being seen

and ignored,

well,

they didn’t like that so much.

So while you and I live in the world between realms,

my world sits a little closer to theirs than your world.

And the gods are making their indignation known

by tearing through the space between our worlds.

I guess if I’m ignoring them,

they want to go looking for someone who won’t.
