The Words You Wouldn’t
I fell in love with your words first—
the things you said,
the way you said them,
the depth and breadth of our conversations.
Hours flew by as
we typed
we talked
we listened
we laughed
we cried,
understanding and being understood
in ways we never had before.
But how can I find any joy
in the words we shared
now that I know the words you hid?
Your words weren’t lies per se,
but they avoided the truth
you didn’t want to tell
you didn’t trust me to hear
you knew I hadn’t guessed
you would have avoided forever.
I fell in love
with the words you told me
and fell into heartbreak
with the words you wouldn’t.
