What They’ve Done
It’s not fair to be judged for
who my parents are,
what my parents have done.
And yet,
not knowing who they are,
not knowing what they’ve done
raises questions in my soul
that demand answers.
My parents know who I was
before I knew me.
Their choices led their lives
to create mine.
They are my history
and parts of them live with me
live in me,
staying in the present
and guiding me into tomorrow.
The choices I make today
are only possible because of
who they are,
what they’ve done.
And I want to know
if those are choices I want to own
in my future.
